Hire buy music service and pay a fee to facebook for a small, per-play advertising slot
facebook will now charge musicians around 4p per play from april 2016 for any music they stream and upload to its online music service, according to a report in the wall street journal.
the move will mean artists who pay to join facebook - and thus pay more for the streaming privilege on the social networking platform - will have less money going to their bank accounts.
and, like google's youtube, the wsj claims that facebook is making money out of a small share of its online music service - currently around 2%. so, it seems, it is not being very generous to musicians at all.
facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg said that the service is a partnership between musicians and facebook, and that the music service in the uk would cost more than 100p a month before any subscription fees.
he added: 'facebook is the place to discover what's out there. you can share what you love, and it will show up in the next feed. it's a good place to explore new artists, or make connections.'
meanwhile, youtube, which has seen artists such as taylor swift and madonna use its service and pay fees to facebook, will make its own cut of the revenue.
the news comes after google announced plans to sell more adverts on youtube, following a £110 million (£76.4 million) payout from a court in italy against it.
