the last time we discussed drugs policy in relation to mental health was in august 2013. we then established just how out of date the existing debate was: the evidence was a long way from 'compelling', the drug control agenda was still dominated by 'criminal enforcement', and drug use wasn't much of a problem. we highlighted the failure of the existing approach to dealing with mental health and drug policy, and highlighted the failure of the existing drugs debate – it had to be abandoned, and the policy discussion was needed.
now, a month later, there are fresh concerns about the effectiveness of drug education and treatment in relation to drug use: the department of health was found to be misleading the commons public accounts committee in a report published in june 2015 (pdf).
the committee criticised the department for taking 'inconsistent positions' on a number of issues, not least that nhs drugs and health care were funded through a single budget.
while that may well be the case, that doesn't mean this issue was resolved.
